FretPet X V1

Since you arrived here you might have clicked “FretPet Website” while running FretPet in an old version of Mac OS X. That would be one of the last classic releases of FretPet built on Carbon for Mac OS X.

In my testing FretPet still runs great on Mac OS X up to 10.14 Mojave (the last version of macOS to support 32-bit Intel applications) and makes a great companion to GarageBand and any MIDI studio.

FretPet OSS

A while ago I opened up the source code of FretPet X 1.4 as a GitHub repository. This source code is a great resource to learn how to write an interactive music sequencer on Mac OS X with a stylized user interface while retaining the intuitive behaviors you expect from a Mac app.

FretPet Authorization

I’m working on providing free builds of old FretPet X 1.4 with the license dialog completely removed. I just have to get the right version of Xcode and get it built. Visit the FretPet GitHub repository to find the latest releases.

FretPet 2026

Thanks to a generous endowment from Anthropic and inexpensive inference I was able to very quickly move forward on FretPet X for modern macOS. It’s already in the middle of stress-testing and optimization and will be available on the Mac App Store soon!
